I'm so insecure that someone really has to hit me over the head for me to believe they like me (platonic or otherwise). So if we exchange phone numbers or something, I'm often too shy to call. I let them call me. If they're not much of a caller or whatever other reason, I usually conclude they were just being nice when they exchanged numbers.

I used to work as a sub at a record store. One of my co-workers there was very nice and enthusiastic about me. I went to an outdoor screening of "Viva Las Vegas" where they had an Elvis impersonation contest. I wasn't planning on entering but they got so few contestants that I figured "what the hey" and entered and won. My co-worker heard about it and demanded I recreate my entry for him in-store. I did and he loved it. I don't think I ever told him that I'm a vocalist but either he heard about it elsewhere or just jumped to that conclusion because he started asking me to let him know about my shows. I was shy about calling him about it because by this time I wasn't being called to sub anymore, without explanation. I really felt weird about whatever politics were going on at the store. So I stopped going by the store. (I don't believe I had his number at this point.)

Several months ago I was dropping by for one reason or another and he asked if I was performing. Surprisingly, the store's live show booker asked as well. I said I'd let them know when next I was performing. I forgot for a couple gigs but remembered this time. I was working inventory at the store on Monday and asked for his number (he wasn't there at the store so I asked the boss for his number). And I just called him tonight.

He was so nice. Even though it's been a number of years since we saw each other regularly, all I had to say was my first name and he remembered me. We chewed the fat a while. I was relieved that he perceived the sudden not-calling for subbing as being related to store machismo. He said it's definitely not just paranoia on my part - the honchos are like that to all women. He said he always enjoyed working with me.

He's got his own record label now.

It was really nice talking to him.
